Psychodermatology is a broad sub-specialty that sees any dermatological condition with a psychological impact. Some of the other specialist conditions I see often include:
- Body dysmorphic disorder (BDD)
- Skin picking disorder (SPD)
- Acne excoriee
- Hair pulling disorder (or trichotillomania)
- Medically unexplained skin signs/symptoms
- Skin sensitivity
- Pruritus (itch)
- Nodular prurigo (itchy nodules on the skin)
In addition to conventional treatments for dermatological conditions, a psychodermatological treatment plan can include:
- Habit reversal therapy (used to break the itch-scratch cycle)
- Psychological interventions (e.g. mindfulness, acceptance and commitment therapy, other talking therapies)
- Educational interventions (used to improve understanding of skin conditions and adherence to treatment plans)
- Mood management
- Anxiety management
- Lifestyle advice (e.g. sleep routine, diet, exercise)
- Stress management techniques (e.g. relaxation therapy)
- I favour holistic treatment as it offers a more long-term approach that takes several factors into account when treating a skin condition.
